Cookie Monster, yep that’s me!

December has begun and that can only mean COOKIE SEASON! To start this entry off I would like to share a bit about why I love cookies so much. I was born in Colombia to an American mother and Colombian father who met while in college in Wisconsin. My mother, who I cannot thank enough, showed me that baking is a great way to show people we love them. Baking cookies was not a very common thing here in Colombia when I was growing up, in fact it was not something most moms did, so when I would show up at school with my mom’s chocolate chip cookies in my lunch box, every kid I knew wanted a piece of my cookies. My mom’s cookies basically became the perfect currency to get anything I wanted from anyone else’s lunch box. At the time I didn’t realize how wonderful this unique talent was but now I look back and admire my mom so much for being different and taking the time to pass her culture down to me and my brother. So, I love cookies and love baking them, especially at Christmas time.

If you are an experienced baker or just starting to dabble in the art of baking, here are some great recipe suggestions for this holiday season along with some great cookbooks that may inspire this cookie season for you and your loved ones.

1. Let’s start off with a Christmas favorite not only for moms but for the whole family to get involved. Sugar cookie cut outs are a classic that allows for some fun time with the kids. My kids are 10 now and they still like decorating sugar cookies. Obviously, who would I refer to next other than the talented Sally at Sally’s Baking Addiction. Her sugar cookie recipe is foolproof and have used it quite a few times. She also refers to her royal icing recipe which is just as good as she says it is so don’t be afraid to try it out. My personal suggestion when making these cookies is to make sure you are following the refrigeration instructions because if you don’t, your dough will be way too sticky and soft and you will become very frustrated when cutting them out. Additionally, let the cookies cool for long enough so your frosting doesn’t melt, trust me on this one. In my opinion the best cookie cutters are metal. Try to keep in mind that the narrower the edges, the easier it is to accidentally break pieces off when you are decorating them. Using cute edible additions is fantastic too.

2. The best chocolate cookies also come from our friend Sally and they are called Double Chocolate Crinkle Cookies, and they are scrumptious. Not only do they look great but if you are a true chocolate lover, they will most likely become one of your favorites. Also, no weird and hard to get ingredients, which to me is a huge plus because although Colombia has evolved quite a bit since I was a kid, it is still hard to get some ingredients. Make sure to use parchment paper, they are soft cookies and full of gooey chocolate so this is not an option.

3. Last but not least if you do realize that cookies are something you want to continue to make then make the effort and get yourself some great cookie cook books, it will be worth it once you see the images and great descriptions that will make the experience much more enjoyable for you and your family. Here is a list of my favorites:
